BNP Sweeps Bangladesh Poll After Hasina Barred, Tarique Rahman Set to Become Prime Minister
After barring Sheikh Hasina from the election, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has won a landslide victory in the country’s first general election. Tarique Rahman, who recently returned from exile after 17 years, is set to become the country’s next Prime Minister following his party’s victory. The election was characterized by the absence of the Awami League, which was banned from contesting, and the emergence of the Islamist party Jamaat, which emerged second. Although the people also voted for major constitutional reforms to restrict the powers of the prime minister and enhance judicial independence, Rahman is faced with the immediate challenge of addressing a struggling economy, food prices, and proving that his “political dynasty” can overcome the corruption allegations that marred the party in the early 2000s.
